Introduction to TETRA

Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) is a modern digital mobile radio solution for mission-critical public safety and military communications, making it the clear choice for mission-critical applications. Terrestrial trunked radio (TETRA) is an open standard developed by European telecommunication associations for secure, trunked communications. TETRA (an acronym for TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) is a radio standard developed by the European Organization for Civil Aviation Electronics (EUROCAE) standards body, with national branches such as TIA in the United States and TTC in Japan. According to the method of communication and frequency usage, the TETRA system is divided into 2 parts: Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) for public networks, and Land Mobile Data (LMD) used for military networks. The specification for LMD was defined by NATO in its STANAG 3204 standard for interoperability. This alphabetical list of TETRA manufacturers that produce TETRA mobile stations, as well as related equipment such as servers/routers and TETRA gateways.

The TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) communications standard is defined by the ETSI TETRA Telecommunications Standardization Sector (“ETSI TS 102 361”). This document describes the overall organization of the TETRA system, including definitions of system and network architecture and protocols, as well as handover procedures and operations between networks. TETRA is a family of digital standards for trunked radio systems, based on the TDMA time multiplex principle. It supports both analog and digital communications on the same frequency band, unlike conventional FDD solutions such as GSM. TETRA (for Terrestrial Trunked Radio) is a digital mobile radio standard that was originally developed by a partnership of 25 European telecommunications industry manufacturers and service providers. The TETRA system is a trunked radio communications system in which the same frequency can be used by several base stations at different sites. The technology behind this allows multiple transmissions to take place simultaneously, improving capacity.

The TETRA standard will improve security and efficiency by providing interoperable voice and data services over a large geographical area, with a high degree of reliability, in all but the most adverse conditions. TETRA is a mobile communications system used in public safety and military organizations, most notably the police, fire, and ambulance services. TETRA is marketed by Motorola Solutions via communications solutions. TETRA provides the ability to transmit data across a network using TDMA technology, as well as transmission encryption standards called TETRA Digital Enhanced Access Control (or DEAC). The TETRA Standard is a set of European radio communications standards. It is based on the concept of trunked radio. A trunked radio system is a type of radio network in which individual users (such as yourself) are given an unused part of the spectrum to use with their equipment simultaneously through the use of pseudo-random noise (PN) codes. Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) is a professional mobile communication standard for use by primarily public safety and military organizations. It provides a high level of security, with encryption and authentication built into the system. TETRA is used worldwide to enable secure communications between public safety, local government, and military agencies.

TETRA Frame Structure

Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) is a digital trunked radio standard used in public safety, private industry, and other handheld device communication needs. TETRA utilizes TDMA Frames to accommodate multiple users simultaneously on one frequency. The frame is 14.4 milliseconds long with a 16 ms interframe spacing. TETRA is a terrestrial trunked radio (TETRA) network structure that supports the implementation of TETRA-compliant networks. The frame structure used in TETRA networks conveys information over a number of time slots allocated to the various nodes. The frame structure employed by TETRA allows full support for P25 features such as call set up and clear down emergency calls and being location aware. The TETRA air interface uses 33 ms TTI frames, with each frame being divided into 16 equally sized timeslots. The first timeslot is used for synchronization and is always transmitted by every radio (be it a mobile or base).

The remaining 15 timeslots are used to carry user information to the other radios in the system. A TETRA frame is a 20ms burst, composed of a fixed 12.5ms guard time and 7.5ms repeated data payload, divided into 15 slots. Each slot corresponds to one of the 25kHz blocks within a single frequency band. The slots repeat across all available bands but may be repeated at half of the repetition rate in higher capacity channels to allow for data transmission alongside control information.
