Introduction to FTTX 

FTTX is a new step forward in the evolution of next-generation technologies. In particular, FTTX is an umbrella term that refers to Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC), Fiber-to-the premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) architectures that deploy fiber deeper into a building, via the exterior wall or basement. FTTX (Fiber-to-theX) technology is a communications protocol that uses optical fiber to deliver broadband access. FTTC delivers high-speed Internet, digital TV and telephone services over a single fiber. FTTP takes the FTTB concept further by providing symmetrical bandwidth speeds (up to 100 Mbps) for customers who wish to have better upload than download performance. FTTx is a communications technology that distributes fiber-optic cables to multi-dwelling units such as apartments and condominiums.

FTTX uses fiber-optic cable connections to transmit data, video and voice signals to and within buildings. Fiber is preferred over other cable types because it allows faster data speeds and greater capacity for information transfer than traditional copper wire systems. Fiber to the X offers fiber optic connections from a premise to one or more locations on the premises. For example, Fiber to the Basement (FTTB) is where fiber runs from a main location to the basement of an apartment complex with wireless connections in each unit; Fiber to the Curb (FTTC) is where fiber runs from a building to a demarcation box in front of that building, with copper cables connecting installations within it. FTTX is the name given to a connection technology that combines fiber and existing telephone lines, to deliver high-speed services over a hybrid network.

Leveraging cable in the last mile connection, FTTX provides a cost effective solution for delivering high-speed broadband access and data services. “Fiber-to-the-X” (FTTX) describes a communications network that includes any combination of twisted pair copper, coaxial cable and/or optical fiber in a full or partial loop from the central office (or other type of switching station) to the subscriber. FTTX is most commonly used to refer to a Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) system that delivers fiber-optic communications from an optical network terminal at the central office directly into residences. An FTTP connection provides for many benefits over traditional copper lines, such as lower latency, greater connectivity and throughput, availability in many locations which were previously considered 'unserved', and significantly lower power consumption by electronics. FTTX (Fiber to the X) is a high-speed broadband access system that uses optical fiber in the backbone and delivers service to the home. 

FTTX Components 

The FTTX system includes fiber optic cable, converters and transformers, signal amplifiers and splitters, passive device such as taps, splitters and filters, active devices such as modems or repeaters, or hybrid systems using both active and passive devices. FTTx enables the construction of faster, simpler and more secure networks as well as offering a wide range of services to meet the needs of all consumers. In addition, FTTx is able to provide high-speed transmission capacity for increased data rates via fiber optics or coaxial cable or microwave radio signals. FTTX is a network architecture and service offering that utilizes multiple technologies to deliver a high bandwidth fibre optic connection to provide data, voice and video transmission. FTTX products are designed to handle today's high broadband demand and future enhancements. The outside plant system components use network equipment designed specifically for FTTH applications, including the optical line terminal(OLT). 

FTTX training and Certification

FTTP installation is on a case by case basis, as Verizon builds out their network to connect each customer's neighborhood to the next. FTTX training and certification is designed to provide a broad, interconnected view of the technologies and processes that comprise FTTX. It lays out in detail all aspects of the design, construction and operation of an FTTX network. FTTX certification is the most important recognition in the telecommunications field and is a definite plus when applying for jobs or promotions. It’s also one of the requirements to becoming CEPT approved as an engineer.
