Introduction to Mobility registration 5G

In 5G, a key new use case is the Mobility Registration Update (MRU) which allows mobile nodes and networks to efficiently synchronize with each other. To support the move to 5G and beyond, many aspects of mobility are undergoing significant changes. To help you understand these changes, this webinar will explain the details and impact of an upcoming mobility registration update. The Mobility Registration Update (MRU) is a key protocol to perform registration of the User Equipment (UE) with its serving Mobility Management Entity (MME). In this document, we provide an overview of the MRU process and describe the various elements involved. With 5G, movement is no longer restricted to stand-alone mobility. With 5G’s mobile broadband capabilities, customers will be able to work or play anywhere, anytime. The Internet of Things and the value of the data created by it are expanding rapidly across industries and use cases through 2021.

Due to the evolving business model and requirements in the telecommunication industry, there is a need for new functionalities, which will be provided in 5G. The first step of this process is mobility registration update (MRU) by means of which all mobile devices in a given radio access network (RAN) can register with their serving RAN node whilst accessing services provided by another RAN. In this article, we describe the features and impact of MRU on 4G, 5G and 6G deployments. As part of the 5G registration process, Mobility Registration Update is a mechanism used by the device to force a registration update. It can be used in scenarios such as when a device moves out of range or when it gets low on battery power. The Mobility Registration Update (MRU) message is a periodic message that allows the UE to update its serving cell and mobility information. The MRU message is used when there is no explicit request from the UE. M-REG is an optional MME feature that allows the serving gateway (SGW) and the radio access network (RAN) to exchange generic tunnel key information. This, in turn, enables the SGW to initiate a security association (SA) establishment with a RAN entity, such as RRC, through both link and authentication bearer contexts while concurrently providing transport layer security between mobile nodes and their network interface using IPSec. If used within a mobility context, the SGW may have to establish a new SA with an MME when it roams onto a new RAN.

Mobility Registration Update Procedure

The M-REG mobility registration update procedure provides a mechanism for both SGW and MME to update their respective SAs according to the information contained in Mobility Management Policy (MMP) messages". With the advent of 5G era, mobile network convergence and multi-access technology are on the road. This can be achieved by upgrading software on mobile devices to support new features expected in 5G and also enables technical operations to subscribe to a new connectivity service. This document describes the interface between the SE (Switching Equipment) and ME (Mobility Entity) and procedures between them in providing connectivity services of Mobile networks. This session will cover the mobility registration update framework and architecture that includes both a non-stored mode and a stored mode. The description of the mobility registration update framework in 5G is based on the use cases for the many types of UE – UEs in Connected mode, UEs in Idle or Connected Standby Mode and UEs in Active Mode. This session will provide insights into the signaling details, such as eNB-eNB interactions, as well as between RNs and HeNBs (HetNets) in H2H/H2J scenarios. The Mobility Registration Update (MRU) is a generic mobility control mechanism that can be used to communicate handover and re-registration information between the UE and the eNB during mobility.

It is intended for use in LTE-Advanced networks. For example, MRU may be used as a trigger for re-registration when a user changes location within an eNodeB area. The message contains information that can be used by a gateway or mobility management entity (MME) to initiate a mobility management procedure such as attaching the researcher to database server, data retrieval from database server etc. Information about the registration update that is available for 5G networks.
