EPC was first introduced by 3GPP in rel-8 of the standard. They decided to make the core network scaling independent, for that there was a requirement of separation of control traffic and user traffic. Because of this split in the network, operators can easily dimension and adapt their network. EPC consists of entities like MME(Mobility management equipment), HSS (Home subscriber server ), SGW (serving gateway), PGW (PDN gateway). MME deals with the control plane , which handles signalling related to mobility and security for E UTRAN access. HSS is a database which contains user related and subscription related information. The gateways SGW and PGW deal with the user plane . they transport IP traffic between the user equipment and the external networks.
